New Orleans is located in southeastern Louisiana about 100 miles north of where the Mississippi River empties in the Gulf of Mexico. One of the oldest cities in the United States, it is today a tourist destination known for its heritage, music, and cuisine. Probably the city is most famous for its oldest neighborhood, French Quarter, and the annual Mardi Gras celebration.

Though tourism represents a major part of the city's economy, New Orleans is also a major industrial and distribution center. The Port of New Orleans is the busiest in the world (in terms of gross tonnage).

Much of the city of New Orleans lies below sea level between the southern shore of Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River and is protected by a series of levees. Only Death Valley and the Salton Sea have lower elevations than New Orleans.

Summer months are typically wet with the driest months occurring in late autumn. Snowfall is rare. Hurricanes pose a constant problem to the city during the season from June through November.

Major sports teams of New Orleans include the New Orleans Saints (football), and the New Orleans Hornets (basketball). The Louisiana Superdome, located here, is also the site of major sporting events throughout the year.
